The new Nokia N900: Computer-grade performance in a handset
Espoo, Finland – Nokia today marked the next phase in the evolution of Maemo software with the new Nokia N900. Taking its cues from the world of desktop computing, the open source, Linux-based Maemo software delivers a PC-like experience on a handset-sized device.
The Nokia N900 has evolved from Nokia’s previous generation of Internet Tablets and broadens the choice for technology enthusiasts who appreciate the ability to multitask and browse the internet like they would on their desktop computer.
Running on the new Maemo 5 software, the Nokia N900 empowers users to have dozens of application windows open and running simultaneously while taking full advantage of the cellular features, touch screen and QWERTY keyboard.
“With Linux software, Mozilla-based browser technology and now also with cellular connectivity, the Nokia N900 delivers a powerful mobile experience,” says Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Markets, Nokia. “The Nokia N900 shows where we are going with Maemo and we’ll continue to work with the community to push the software forward. What we have with Maemo is something that is fusing the power of the computer, the internet and the mobile phone, and it is great to see that it is evolving in exciting ways.”
Designed for computer-grade performance in a compact size, Maemo complements Nokia’s other software platforms, such as Symbian, which powers Nokia’s smartphones.
“Just as Nokia continues to expand and diversify its device portfolio, so it is deploying multiple platforms to allow it to serve different purposes and address different markets. While we have seen continued growth in Symbian as a smartphone platform, Maemo enables Nokia to deliver new mobile computing experiences based on open-source technology that has strong ties with desktop platforms,” says Jonathan Arber, Senior Research Analyst in Consumer Mobile at IDC.

More multitasking with Maemo
The Nokia N900 packs a powerful ARM Cortex-A8 processor, up to 1GB of application memory and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration. The result is PC-like multitasking, allowing many applications to run simultaneously. Switching between applications is simple, as all running content is constantly available through the dashboard. The panoramic homescreen can be fully personalized with favorite shortcuts, widgets and applications.
To make web browsing more enjoyable, the Nokia N900 features a high-resolution WVGA touch screen and fast internet connectivity with 10/2 HSPA and WLAN. Thanks to the browser powered by Mozilla technology, websites look the way they would on any computer. Online videos and interactive applications are vivid with full Adobe Flash(TM) 9.4 support. Maemo software updates happen automatically over the internet.
Messaging on the N900 is easy and convenient thanks to the full physical slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Setting up email happens with only a few touches and the Nokia Messaging service mobilizes up to 10 personal email accounts. Text message or IM exchanges with friends are shown in one view and all conversations are organized as separate windows.
The Nokia N900 has 32GB of storage, which is expandable up to 48GB via a microSD card. For photography, the Maemo software and the N900 come with a new tag cloud user interface that will help users get the most out of the 5MP camera and Carl Zeiss optics.
The Nokia N900 will be available in select markets from October 2009 with an estimated retail price of EUR 500 excluding sales taxes and subsidies. The Nokia N900 will be displayed at Nokia World, Stuttgart, on September 2. More information on Maemo is available at http://maemo.nokia.com.

Nokia N900 Press Pictures

With Nokia World only 6 days away at time of writing this post, Nokia have pretty much turned this whole week into ‘Nokia Week’.  First Eldar from Mobile-Review publishes a preview on the Nokia N900 which is due to be announced next week, followed by a preview on the Nokia N97 Mini, then comes the Nokia 5230 a day later which is a new touchscreen device packing HSDPA and a range of colours.  If that was not enough for a week, Nokia then tease everyone with the Booklet 3G which is their version of a Netbook and again more details are due next week at Nokia World.

Also last last week Nokia Conversations announced the Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition which is a 5800 with a lifetime Nokia Maps license and a car kit for using as a sat-nav

French website Be Geek have come across 2 press photos of the Nokia N900 which means the only thing we have to do now is the hard part…… WAIT!.  The pictures show what Maemo looks like when in a phone call and the other shows Google Talk which is a great addition.

With all these announcements in the space of just over a week can Nokia really have anything left to announce at this year’s Nokia World?.  Well the answer is YES!.  Expect to see some great services announced along side these new devices.

I will be posting live from Nokia World this year getting all the news and gossip as it happens so check back from 9am on Wednesday 2nd September for the live updates from Stuttgart

Nokia 5230 Announced Today

August 25, 2009 by Dan Carter

Nokia Conversations just today announced the Nokia 5230 to the world.  Nokia are on a roll now with the 3G Booklet video yesterday and now the 5230.

Unlike the 5530 which went on sale recently, the 5230 does have HSDPA so web browsing or downloading music is much much faster.  This was a let down for me on the 5530 so it is nice too see Nokia have corrected this and it is also nice to see a bit of colour in the new phones.

The press release reads:

The latest addition in the Nokia touch phone portfolio, the Nokia 5230, is designed for those who lead an active life and use their mobile phone as their primary instrument for music, photos and videos, as well as sharing their lives online. With the Nokia 5230, consumers can get new content, be it songs from the Nokia Music Store or apps, games, videos and other services from the Ovi Store, directly from their phones. The solutions offering is complemented by A-GPS navigation and the latest version of Ovi Maps with aerial images, 3D landmarks for over 200 cities and terrain map views for pedestrian and drive navigation.

“Competitively priced at 149 EUR, we believe the Nokia 5230 is an unbeatable offer for many new customers who aspire a device that stars in music, mingles with social networks from Facebook to MySpace, navigates you to where it happens, when it happens,  and comes in an array of dazzling colors, ” said Jo Harlow, Vice President, Nokia.

Visiting the Ovi Store from the Nokia 5230 is a breeze. Ovi Store is conveniently accessible from the home screen of the phone and customers can immediately begin downloading and personalizing their phones with popular apps and games to make their phone more fun. New apps, games, videos, and more are added regularly and Ovi Store can be enjoyed on more than 75 Nokia devices and has active users from more than 180 countries.

The Nokia 5230 features an easy to use music player with 33 hours of playback time. In select markets the Nokia 5230 will include Comes With Music service offering truly unbeatable value with all you can eat music. The recommended price of the Nokia 5230 with the Comes With Music service will be 259 EUR before subsidies and taxes. For a mighty music experience, any headphones with a 3.5mm AV connector can be used. In addition, the Nokia 5230 features a Media Bar with quick access to your favorite media and applications, such as music, photos, YouTube or Ovi Share.

The innovative Contacts bar features thumbnail images for up to 20 close friends and provides easy access to them and their communications history including emails, phone calls, photos or other social media updates.

The Nokia 5230 is expected to begin shipping in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Espoo, Finland – After more than 25 years as a pioneer and leader in the mobile industry, Nokia will bring its rich mobility heritage and knowledge to the PC world with the new, Windows based, Nokia Booklet 3G.

Nokia-Booklet-3G-colours

Powered by the efficient Intel Atom processor, the Nokia Booklet 3G delivers impressive performance with up to 12 hours of battery life, enabling people to leave their power cable behind and still be connected and productive. Delivering the rich experience of a full-function PC inside an ultra-portable aluminum chassis, the new mini-laptop weighs 1.25 kilograms, measures slightly more than two centimeters thin, and has the features one would expect from the world’s leading mobile device manufacturer. A broad range of connectivity options – including 3G/ HSPA and Wi-Fi – gives consumers high speed access to the Internet, including Nokia’s broad suite of Ovi services, and allows them to make the most of every moment and every opportunity.

booklet-1

“A growing number of people want the computing power of a PC with the full benefits of mobility,” said Kai Oistamo, Nokia’s Executive Vice President for Devices. “We are in the business of connecting people and the Nokia Booklet 3G is a natural evolution for us. Nokia has a long and rich heritage in mobility and with the outstanding battery life, premium design and all day, always on connectivity, we will create something quite compelling. In doing so we will make the personal computer more social, more helpful and more personal.”

The mini-laptop also comes with an HDMI port for HD video out, a front facing camera for video calling, integrated Bluetooth and an easily accessible SD card reader. Other premium features include the 10-inch glass HD ready display and integrated A-GPS which, working with the Ovi Maps gadget, can pinpoint your position in seconds and open up access for a truly personal maps experience. The Nokia Booklet 3G also brings a number of other rich Ovi experiences to life, whether its access and playback of millions of tracks through the Nokia Music Store, or using Ovi Suite to sync seamlessly from your Nokia smartphone, to your mini-laptop, to the cloud.

The Nokia Booklet 3G will widen the Nokia portfolio, satisfying a need in the operator channel, and bringing another important ingredient in the move towards becoming a mobile solutions company.

Further information, including detailed specifications, market availability and pricing, will be announced at Nokia World on September 2. For more information on Nokia World, visit: http://events.nokia.com/nokiaworld/home.htm

Our friends at All About Symbian have just posted the following specs:

Key hardware information

  • Intel Atom Chipset (Z530 running at 1.6 Ghz). No fan, which means near silent running.
  • 120 GB hard disk
  • 3G / HSDPA and WiFi connectivity, plus integrated Bluetooth for local wireless communication
  • 12 hour battery life
  • 10 inch glass HD ready display
  • Front facing video camera mounted, on top of the screen, for video calling
  • 1 x HDMI port (for HD video out), 1 x integarted SD card reader, 3 x USB ports, 1 x audio port
  • Integrated A-GPS
  • Stereo speakers mounted on the front right and left corners

Key software information

  • Tight integration with Ovi Services including Ovi Suite for syncing seamlessly to other Nokia devices and the cloud.
  • Ovi Maps gadget, which can pinpoint your position within seconds, and ‘opens up access for a truly personal maps experience’.
  • Runs Windows as its operating system. We’ll hear what version next week, at Nokia World. However given the inclusion of a Ovi Maps ‘gadget; it seems reasonable to assume it will be Windows Vista or above. Given the timing and premium features it is not unreasonable to assume this will be a Windows 7 device. Microsoft would be keen to have a brand such as Nokia involved in the latest version of its OS.

Why Windows? Windows is the ‘logical choice and is the market leader’.

  • Takes less than 60 seconds to boot up from cold.

Nokia N97 Mini At FCC??? (Due MWC 2010?)

August 20, 2009 by Dan Carter

On browsing the FCC website, It appears that the Nokia N97 Mini has made it’s way into testing.  A picture from the FCC website which is below ties in with what the N97 Mini is supposed to look like and the camera lens reminds you of the original N97 (apart from no slider).

showimage.php

With the N97 Mini already at the FCC you can also expect it to go on sale soon after the announcement too which is great as Nokia fans before now would see the device announced and then have to wait 6 months at least for it to go on sale!.

Rumored specs of the Mini are a cut down screen at 2.9 inch instead of 3.5 inch on the original N97, 8GB of internal memory, the same slide design but this time no D-Pad on the keyboard, the whole space is for letter keys and it also has the same 5 mega pixel camera as the original N97 but this time with no lens cover

There is also a document on the FCC Website which states:

Attention: Equipment Authorization Branch

REQUEST FOR SHORT TERM CONFIDENTIALITY

Pursuant to Section 0.459 of the Commission’s Rules and Public Notice DA 04-1705 of June

15, 2004, the Applicant hereby requests for 180 days short term confidential treatment of

some of the information accompanying this application of FCC ID: QVVRM-555 and as

outlined below:

- Exhibit 3:  External photos

- Exhibit 7:  Test setup photos

- Exhibit 8:  User’s manual

- Exhibit 9:  Internal photos

These materials contain proprietary information not yet released to the public and the

public disclosure of these matters might be harmful to the Applicant and provide

unjustified benefits to its competitors.

With Mobile World Congress 2010 around about 170 days away from today, this ties in well with an announcement of the device.
