8 Megapixel Race

Sony Ericsson recently  announced their 8 megapixel snapper in the form of the C905 device and news spread across the internet within minutes.  The C905 has packed in the specs featuring a 8 megappixel camera, GPS, WiFi, HSDPA, 30 frames per second video recording, Xenon Flash with Auto-Focus and a large 2GB memory card included in the box.

Motorola were next with the ‘Alexander’ which features a touch screen, GPS and again a 8 megapixel camera

Then came Samsung with the i8510 announced only a few days ago with pretty much the same features as both above handsets but I have 1 question……….where is the Nokia 8 megapixel camera phone?

The N96 which has been delayed again until September now still has a 5 megapixel camera, the recently launched 6220 has a 5 megapixel camera and at the top of the back is still the N82 with a 5 megapixel camera but there has been no news of anything higher.

Although its not all about getting the most megapixel to get the best picture, the lens has a huge impact on the photo from a customer point of view they will see lots of 5 meg phones and then see some 8 and most of the time pick the 8 just because its a higher number and has a larger camera.

Normally the guys over at All About Symbian or IntoMobile have leaked photos by now or even a rough spec list but so far nothing at all which has me thinking……. does Nokia have something up their sleeve they are going to hit us with as a surprise?

Then again would announcing  a new 8 megapixel camera phone before the N96 have a drastic negative effect on N96 sales or would be waiting until the C905 is out before even announcing a new camera phone be too late?

So I put an open question out to readers…. what would YOU like on the new Nokia handset when it gets announced (please lets try to be realistic so no 20mp camera with 14.4mb HSDPA).

I would like to see:

  • 8 Megapixel Camera with Carl Zeiss Optics
  • Xenon Flash
  • 30FPS Video Recording & Playback
  • 7.2mb/s HSDPA & 1.4mb/s HSUPA
  • 1GB Internal Memory (plus MicroSD for additional 16gb if wanted/needed)
  • VGA Screen (640×480 pixels)
Am I asking for too much do you think?, well it would blow the others out of the water totally if these were the specs so if your reading Nokia….. pretty please :)

I think the main thing I would want is optical zoom. I find the zoom on most phones is just terrible with the digital, and until they have a decent optical (even if its just 3x) I couldn’t replace one of my digital cameras with one.

I think the new nokia 8 megapixel camera should have video recording of QVGA over 120 fps. And HTML email supporting. And it should be thin and slim with big LCD screen. With GPS receiver and all other features.

120fps is not new now that LG have 2 phones with it so it would be good for Nokia to have this although I will be happy with a 8mp Carl Zeiss lens to start with.

120fps would be handy once we get into HD video on mobiles but that is a way off yet

n96 with 8 megapixels, nokia already do a great job on most things
they could also look at any tweaks with n96 and fix them for compatability with 8 mp

The Nokia’s Carl Zeiss lens and SE are very good… even better than other Samsung and LG of more mpx…
Other important question is about flash, some cells have LED flash, other Dual LED Flash and other Xenon Flash which is the best…
But… surprise! Pictures with LG Viewty 5 mpx Xenon Flash are worse than with N95 mpx Carl Zeiss LED Flash… Of course comparing LG Viewty with N82 and SE K850 (or better, C905) is even worse…
