- IT’S TONIGHT DAMMIT-
…and can you believe there is currently, at the time of writing, 119 people down as confirmed as coming?!
(don’t even ask me about the ‘maybes’)
Amazing.
Really.
I am completely and utterly overwhelmed.
Who’d have thought it huh?

It’s been just over a year since our very first meet-up way back when, upstairs in the Bricklayers Arms…
20 of us or so, all gathered round a table, drinking beer and coo-ing over the first generation iPhone.
What a sight we must have been.
From there Mobile Geeks of London, (or ‘MGoL‘ as it has become to be known) has gone from strength to strength. The MGoL facebook group is now 354 members strong and, as you can see – as time has gone on there has been a really lovely increase in the turnout for each event -
Just – awesome – really, really awesome ![]()
This year of course, also marked the first time we took MGoL: On Tour.
Starting (and ending – hehe) in Las Vegas and timed to coincide with the start of the CTIA Wireless Conference – MGoL, along with some help from the team at Brilliant Expos, set a new precendent in the history of the Mobile Geeks and laid down the template for any future events that take place under the ‘On Tour‘ banner. Of which, I can guarantee, there will be more coming soon… Watch this space.
So.. Here we are… Let’s do it shall we? ![]()

Nokia E71 On 3UK

Recently it was rumored that the Nokia E71 was going to be available in the UK any day now and 3 was one of the networks rumored to have taken this new E-Series into it’s range.
Then came the recent July edition of the 3 Brochure and there is was in black & white… Nokia E71 (Coming Soon). This is a handset fellow World Of Nokia member Christian has been testing (big thanks to WOM World again for the loan of the device of course) and he loves it so far.
So then onto today and the 3 press event in London held with 3MobileBuzz. I was unable to attend due to the distance but Ewan from SMSTextNews went along with many other members of the media and as you can see by the snap below he managed to get hands on the Nokia E71 in exclusive white which is a really nice looking phone

During the event the date of the E71 was supposed to be within the next 2 weeks but it has now been said the device has in fact launched TODAY!. Currently not showing online at Three.co.uk so I will be going to my local store tomorrow and asking if they have had any in yet.
8 Megapixel Race

Sony Ericsson recently announced their 8 megapixel snapper in the form of the C905 device and news spread across the internet within minutes. The C905 has packed in the specs featuring a 8 megappixel camera, GPS, WiFi, HSDPA, 30 frames per second video recording, Xenon Flash with Auto-Focus and a large 2GB memory card included in the box.
Motorola were next with the ‘Alexander’ which features a touch screen, GPS and again a 8 megapixel camera
Then came Samsung with the i8510 announced only a few days ago with pretty much the same features as both above handsets but I have 1 question……….where is the Nokia 8 megapixel camera phone?
The N96 which has been delayed again until September now still has a 5 megapixel camera, the recently launched 6220 has a 5 megapixel camera and at the top of the back is still the N82 with a 5 megapixel camera but there has been no news of anything higher.
Although its not all about getting the most megapixel to get the best picture, the lens has a huge impact on the photo from a customer point of view they will see lots of 5 meg phones and then see some 8 and most of the time pick the 8 just because its a higher number and has a larger camera.
Normally the guys over at All About Symbian or IntoMobile have leaked photos by now or even a rough spec list but so far nothing at all which has me thinking……. does Nokia have something up their sleeve they are going to hit us with as a surprise?
Then again would announcing a new 8 megapixel camera phone before the N96 have a drastic negative effect on N96 sales or would be waiting until the C905 is out before even announcing a new camera phone be too late?
So I put an open question out to readers…. what would YOU like on the new Nokia handset when it gets announced (please lets try to be realistic so no 20mp camera with 14.4mb HSDPA).
I would like to see:
- 8 Megapixel Camera with Carl Zeiss Optics
- Xenon Flash
- 30FPS Video Recording & Playback
- 7.2mb/s HSDPA & 1.4mb/s HSUPA
- 1GB Internal Memory (plus MicroSD for additional 16gb if wanted/needed)
- VGA Screen (640×480 pixels)
Face The Task!

Nokia have come up with another brilliant marketing idea under the phrase ‘Face The Task’. As with the ‘There’s a thing in my pocket‘, this new online website features 6 video clips of a ninja type lady jumping onto rooftops and into the trees using her Nokia N96 to find her way, record video clips and snap away using the 5 megapixel camera (don’t worry if your lost already…. I was too )
The whole idea is to advertise the benefits of the N96 and at the end gives you 2 ways to win your own handset. Either you can donate a set amount of money at a set time to the WWF to save the Red Panda and get a N96, or you can also watch all the videos and choose to be entered into a draw to win your very own limited edition N96.
In all there are 96 to give away so get in there quick as Nokia are going to release these on FRIDAY!. There are only 95 to be given away as I have managed to snag 1 for myself (ok I lie I have not got 1 but I have my name down and will have every possible finger and toe crossed I win! a device)
Why not check it out for yourself here http://www.facethetask.com

Nokia Pushing GPS Service

Nokia is launching one of its biggest-ever marketing campaigns centred around its latest handset, the 6220, to promote the manufacturer’s push for navigation-enabled devices.
The multimillion-pound campaign, which will hit TV, radio, and print, aims to establish Nokia’s position as a navigation brand.
Nokia has agreed revenue-share deals with some networks for data usage on the service.
The manufacturer claims to have shipped more than two-million GPS-enabled devices over the last 12 months, more than GPS rivals TomTom.
While some industry critics say that a high percentage of those Nokia devices may not be used for navigation purposes, Nokia claims that over 50% are actively being used for navigation.
Nokia’s 6220 (pictured) is a high-spec, mass-market device loaded with the manufacturer’s latest GPS product, Nokia Maps 2.0.
UK MD Simon Ainslie (pictured) said: ‘When consumers are looking to purchase a mobile device, the key features that they are looking for are a great camera, great music capabilities and now navigation. Navigation is the big thing for us.’
Nokia bought navigation firm Navteq for £4bn in November 2007, and the manufacturer launched Nokia Maps 2.0 last month, an update of the 1.0 product. A 3.0 version, which is significantly advanced again, is already in development.
Ainslie said: ‘Anything that engages a customer with a phone encourages loyalty which helps grow sales.
‘In terms of revenue stream, the operator benefits and we share some revenue from the service. They get extra data opportunities.’
Marketing director Will Harris said: ‘Our latest marketing campaign is going to see an iconic representation of mapping and navigation.
‘If you are creating a new market, you have an undertaking to educate that market.
‘We see navigation as the most-exciting development for mobiles since texting.’
